Osoegawa the Mage is the first chapter of the The Mage Next Door manga series, written and illustrated by Hideaki Nabe. It was released on November 3, 2025.
Summary[edit]
The chapter begins in the Magic World, introducing Mage Toya Osoegawa, who is seen slacking off and reading manga instead of training like the other mages. Toya is known for creating weird magic for convenience, rather for battle, he is then summoned by Divine Magus, who tasks him with going to the human world to capture evil mages. Toya then complains and tries to get out of the mission, saying he's too busy to go, but the Magus forcibly sends him anyway, believing his unique magic and human like personality are what's needed the most. He arrives in a rural human village, where he meets Divine Magus's clone, Mini Magus. As he's complaining about his situation, he's found by a local boy named Keisuke, who mistakes Osoegawa's exhaustion for heatstroke and takes him to his family's shop. Keisuke's mother then gives Osoegawa a drink and invites him to stay for dinner and the night, and Osoegawa is struck by their kindness and the peacefulness of the human world. The next morning, however, they discover the shop has been ransacked, with the cash register and all the goods gone. Osoegawa then senses magic in the air and realizes a mage is responsible for this, he comforts Keisuke's devastated mother, and promises to catch the criminal responsible for this. After borrowing Keisuke's bike, Osoegawa follows the magic and confronts the two evil mages in the woods. Realizing Osoegawa isn't a normal mage, the two evil mages try making a deal with him, but Kogata taunts Osoegawa in the process, which triggers a traumatic flashback for Osoegawa. Osoegawa then places a seal on both the evil mages called "The Divine Magic Seal" and sends them back to magic world, The Divine Magus sees that the two mages were strong and Toya's success is celebrated in the Magic World. Osoegawa then returns to the store with all the stolen goods and uses magic that cleans up the room, leaving Keisuke and his mother speechless. Osoegawa and Mini Magus then leave the village.
